THE WORLD OF MARCELLA ECHEVARRIA in SURevolution

For one reason or the other our ways crossed with Marcella (click) in the last four years, and we were always interested by her proposal of opening a space through SURevolution (click) so that the world of the artisans got integrated to the world of design in a direct and operative manner. The possibility of establishing a bridge between the artisans tied to the land through their customs and ancestral techniques and the highest standards in design is the esence of her work. In wearing or using the sofisticated products of SURevolution we have the opportunity of helping develop the economy of indigenous populations, and at the same time ground our modern lives somehow  alienated from the origin of things. Marcella was born in Clombia and Lives in New York, she is a historian and a journalist, but first of all she is a bridge between two worlds.

INTERVIEW: MARCELA ECHEVARRIA

1-  What do you consider was the leap in your life to be where you are today?

Being fearless, understanding that nothing really exists because we have the power to create it…

My sister died of cancer when I was graduating from high school and about to start college in the US.  I decided then that i was going to take full responsibility for my journey and design a meaningful life where I could contribute.  The question was: what can I do for the world?

Then destiny gave me the elements and signs and I followed and trusted them.

2-What gave you the impulse to give a leap?

Knowing that this was my contribution to the world and that I had to pay my dues and endure to make it happen.

3-How was the first moment of change?

I live in a constant process of change.

4-Did you fulfill your goal? Did you find a new one along the way?

My large goal is to find sustainable ways to preserve cultures so it is a large one that will take several generations…I have just started the conversation and along with it have found many new goals and journeys..(Many detours as well!!)

5- What do you think would have happened to you if you didn’t take this path?

I would definetely not have the super exciting life that I have now

6- Would you do it again?

Yes! A million times

7- What moves you forward in your chosen path?

Endurance and the commitment to make change happen

8- What do you feel opened to you in giving a leap?

The big picture, the vision and the hope for a better world.

9- A thought or Anecdote you would like to share with AW?

“They do not have chairs in New York?” asked the chief of the Sikuanis, an indigenous group that lives in the llanuras bewteen the Andes and the Orinoco.  A mysterious group  of warriors whose language is  similar to German and whose territory is sacred in spite of beign in the center of Colombia’s civil war, in the so called coca’s corridor.

While the women from the community initiate the girl in all the secrets of womanhood, the father carves a “tapi” or ritual stool in preparation for the festivities…in it, as a canvas, the father paints what the ancestors tell him about his daughter…will she be a siren? Will she be a weaver? Will she sing?

“I am a designer too” says  the captain’s wife  when I explained to the women that the ritual stools that their husbands were carving in the jungle had to be ready  because Donna Karan(click), well known fashion designer,  needed them in New York.   Their dresses, of their personal design, with colorful fabrics, mostly silks with flowers, were very much in sinc with the New York spring collections.

EL MUNDO DE MARCELLA ECHEVARRIA EN SURevolution

Por una razón u otra nuestros caminos se cruzaron con Marcella (click) en los últimos cuatro años, y siempre nos interesó su propuesta de abrir un espacio a través de SURevolution (click) para que el mundo de las artesanías se integre al diseño de una manera directa y operativa. La posibilidad de establecer un puente entre los artesanos arraigados a la tierra a través de sus costumbre y técnicas ancestrales y los más altos estandares de diseño es la esencia de au trabajo. Al usar los sofisticados productos de SURevolution tenemos la posibildad de ayudar a desarrollar la economía de poblaciones indígenas, y a la vez  humanizar nuestras vidas modernas un tanto alienadas del origen de las cosas. Marcella nació en Colombia y vive en New York, es historiadora y periodista, pero sobre todo es el puente entre dos mundos.

ENTREVISTA; MARCELLA ECHEVARRIA

1-Cual consideras fue el salto que dió el vuelco en tu vida para estar hoy donde estás?

No tener miedo, entender que nada realmente existe porque tenemos el poder de crearlo …

Mi hermana murió de cancer cuando yo me estaba graduando de la secundaria y estaba por comenzar la universidad en Estados Unidos. Decidí entonces que iba a tomar absoluta responsabilidad de mi camino y que iba  a diseñar una vida significativa donde yo pudiera contribuir. La pregunta era: que puede hacer yo por el mundo?

El destino me dio los elementos y las señales y yo las seguí y confié en ellas.

2- Qué fue lo que te impulsó a dar un salto?

Saber que esto era mi contribucion al mundo y que yo tenía que pagar mi parte y resistir hasta que ocurriera.

3- Cómo fue el primer momento de cambio?

Yo vivo en un constante proceso de cambio.

4- Cumpliste tu objetivo? Encontraste otro en el camino?

Mi camino es encontrar maneras sustentables de preservar culturas por lo cual es uno grande que va a tomar muchas generaciones…Yo recien estoy empezando en el camino y al hacerlo encontré muchos nuevos objetivos y caminos…(Muchos bifurcaciones también!!)

5-Qué te imaginás hubiera pasado en tu vida de no tomar este camino?

Definitivamente no tendría la vida interesante que tengo.

6- Lo volverías a hacer?

Sí! Un millón de veces.

7- Qué te impulsa a seguir el camino elegido?

Persistencia y resisitencia y el compromiso de hacer que el cambio suceda.

8- Qué se te abrió al dar el salto?

El gran dibujo, la visión y la esperanza por un mundo mejor.

9- Un pensamiento o anécdota que te gustaría compartir con AW.

” No tiene sillas en New York?” preguntó el jefe de los Sikuanis, un grupo indígena de las llanuras entre los Andes y el Orinoco. Un misterioso grupo de guerreros cuyo lenguaje es similar al aleman y cuyo territorio es sagrado a pesar de estar en el centro de la guera civil colombiana, en el llamdo corredor de la coca.

Mientras las mujeres de la comunidad inician a las niñas en los secretos de la feminidad, el padre talla un “Tapi” un banco ritual en preparaión para las festividades… en el como en la tela de un cuadro pinta lo que los ancestros le dictan acerca de su hija…sera una sirena? una tejedorea, cantará?

“Yo tambien soy una diseñadora” dice la esposa del jefe, cuando le exlicamos que los bancos que esta tallando su esposo en la selva sera vendido por Donna Karan (click), conocidad diseniadora, en New York. Sus vestidos de un diseño personal con telas coloridas, en seda y prints, estaba sorpredentemente sintonizados con la coleccion de primavera en New York
